Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: Majoret' and Carneval'
Summary: SW Midas' is a semi-leafless, yellow field pea variety whereas Majoret' has green cotyledons. The vines of SW Midas' are significantly shorter than the vines of Carneval'. The base of the flower standard is arched in SW Midas', while it is strongly arched in Carneval'. SW Midas' produces pods which are weakly curved, compared with Carneval' which has straight pods with no curvature and Majoret' has medium pod curvature. The distal end of the pods of SW Midas' are blunt, whereas they are pointed in Majoret'. SW Midas' has small to medium sized seeds. Majoret' has medium to large sized seeds.
Description:
SW Midas' is a semi-leafless field pea variety with no stem fasciation and no anthocyanin colouration. The plant colour is green. The vines are short to medium in length. Stipule development is normal and there are no rabbit-eared stipules. Flecking of the stipules is sparse to medium.
SW Midas' flowers early to mid-season and produces two flowers per node. The standard of the flower is white to cream in colour and the base is arched. The pods are green with weak concave curvature and the distal part of the pod is blunt. The immature seeds are light green. The mature seeds of SW Midas' are small to medium in size and have a yellow cotyledon and no black hilum. The shape of the starch grain is simple.
Origin & Breeding History: SW Midas', which was tested under the experimental number SW 975539, originated from a cross which was made in 1994 in Svalöv, Sweden. A pedigreed breeding method was used and the variety originates from a single plant selection in the F5. Selection was made for yield, semi-leafless trait, earliness, straw stiffness, good yellow colour and good tendrils. Breeder seed was bulked in the F8 generation.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for SW Midas' were conducted at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during 2002 and 2003. The trials consisted of 2 replicates per variety, with a seeding density of approximately 52 plants per square metre. Each plot measured 1.75 metres by 3.25 metres. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per year.
