Variety Description

Summary: 'Canstar' has a taller plant height and a higher number of stem nodes than 'Eclipse'. 'Canstar' has a smaller stipule with sparser stipule flecking than 'Eclipse'. 'Canstar' has a longer pod length and a slightly higher number of ovules per pod than 'Eclipse'. 'Canstar' has a spherical shaped seed while 'Eclipse' has an ovoid shaped seed. 'Canstar' is moderately resistant to Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. pisi while 'Eclipse' is susceptible.

Description:

'Canstar' is a semi-leafless field pea variety with no stem fasciation and no anthocyanin colouration. The plant colour is yellow green to green. The vines are medium in length. 'Canstar' has moderate waxiness on the upper surface of the stipules and very weak to weak dentation. Stipule development is normal and there are a medium number of rabbit-eared stipules. Flecking of the stipules is sparse.

'Canstar' flowers mid-season and produces two to three flowers per node. There is a medium number of flower bearing nodes per stem. The flower standard is white and has a level to slightly arched base. The apex of the upper calyx lobe is rounded. The length of the peduncle from the stem to first flower is medium to long. The pods of 'Canstar' have no parchment or thickened wall. The pods have very weak, concave curvature and the distal part of the pod is blunt. There are no strings of suture. The pod is green in colour and the immature seeds are light to medium green.

'Canstar' has a simple shaped starch grain and has green cotyledons. The cotyledon has no wrinkling and has very weak dimpling. The seed does not have black colour in the hilum. The seed is spherical in shape and medium to large in size. 'Canstar' matures mid to late season.

'Canstar' is moderately resistant to Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. pisi, susceptible to Mycosphaerella pinodes and resistant to powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni).

Origin & Breeding History: 'Canstar' originated from the cross 'DS Stalworth' x 'Aladin', made at Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada Research Station in Morden, Manitoba in 1995. 'Canstar' was developed by using a pedigree breeding method in combination with single seed descent. It was entered in the 2001-2002 Field Pea Cooperative Test-B as entry MP1814.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Canstar' were conducted at Morden, Manitoba during 2003 and 2004. The trials consisted of 4 replicates per variety, in a randomized complete block design. Plot size was 5 x 1 meter with row space of 20 cm. The seeding rate was 85 germinating seeds per square meter. Measured characteristics were based on 40 measurements.
