Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Eclipse'
Summary: 'Reward' has a taller plant than 'Eclipse'. The stipule of 'Reward' is smaller than that of 'Eclipse'. 'Reward' has a stronger degree of curvature of the pod than 'Eclipse'. 'Reward' has better lodging resistance than 'Eclipse'.
Description:
'Reward is a semi-leafless field pea variety that is absent of stem fasciation. At flowering, the plant has a green colour and is absent of anthocyanin colouration. The vine after flowering is medium to long in length. The leaf and stipule has weak waxiness of the upper surface. Stipule development is normal, is absent of rabbit-earred stipules and has medium to dense flecking.
'Reward' flowers midseason with many flower bearing nodes along the stem, each containing one or two flowers per node. The flower standard is white in colour with an arched shaped base. The apex of the upper calyx lobe of the flower is pointed. The peduncle of the flower from the stem to the first flower is medium in length. The pod has a weak curvature with the direction of the seed bearing suture being concave. The pod colour is green at the fully swollen stage and has a blunt shaped distal part. The immature seed of 'Reward' is light green in colour. The starch grain is simple. The cotyledon is yellow in colour. The seed are medium to large in size, ovoid in shape and have no wrinkling or dimpling of the cotyledon. 'Reward' matures mid to late season.
'Reward' is resistant to powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni) and moderately susceptible to mycosphaerella blight (Mycosphaerella pinodes), and Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum F. sp. pisi).
Origin & Breeding History: 'Reward' was developed from the cross 4-9359.016 x MP1491made in 1996 at Agriculture & AgriFood Morden Research Station, Morden, Manitoba. 4-9359.016 is a breeding line resistant to powdery mildew that later became 'DS Stalwarth' and MP1491 a powdery mildew susceptible line. MP1491 was derived from the cross 'Topper' x 'Montana', where 'Topper' was developed at AAFC Morden, and 'Montana' was developed by Cebeco Zaden, The Netherlands. The breeding method used for 'Reward' was a pedigree selection in combination with single seed descent. All breeding activities of the F1-F5 generations were conducted in Morden, Manitoba. In 1997, the F1 was grown in a greenhouse in the spring and the F2 was grown in the field in the summer. A powdery mildew resistant plant was selected from the F2 population and advanced to the F4 in the greenhouse using single seed descent in the winter of 1997/1998. The F5 generation was grown in the field in the summer of 1998 and the F6 generation was grown in Brawley, California, USA in the winter of 1998/1999. It was designated line 9674057 and tested in a replicated trial at Morden, Manitoba in the summer of 1999 and then tested in replicated trials at 2 locations in Manitoba in 2000. In 2001, it was renamed P9674057 and evaluated in replicated trials in 13 locations; 4 in Manitoba, 4 in Saskatchewan, 4 in Alberta, and one in Quebec. The line was entered into the 2002 and 2003 field pea Cooperative Test-A as entry MP1820 and tested at a total of 17 station-years.
Tests & Trials: Test and trials were conducted in Lacombe, Alberta during the summers of 2004 and 2005. Plots consisted of 4 rows, 5m in length with a spacing within the row of 20cm. There were 4 reps arranged in a RCB design.
