Summary: The density of flecking on the stipules of 'LN4228' is very sparse whereas it is sparse on 'Agassiz'. 'LN4228' flowers early in the season whereas 'CDC Meadow' and 'Agassiz' flower mid-season. The base of the flower standard of 'LN4228' is level whereas it is moderately arched for 'CDC Meadow' and 'Agassiz'. The flower standard of 'LN4228' has strong undulation whereas 'Agassiz' has medium. The curvature of the pod of 'LN4228' is absent or very weak whereas it is weak for 'CDC Meadow' and 'Agassiz'. 'LN4228' has a shorter stem length than 'CDC Meadow' and 'Agassiz'. 'LN4228' has a heavier 1000 seed weight than both reference varieties.

UPPER SEPAL: narrow, acuminate apex at second flowering node
POD: parchment entire, thickened wall absent, blunt distal part, absent or very weak curvature, medium green when fully swollen, suture strings present
IMMATURE SEED: light green
DRY SEED: ellipsoid shape, compound starch grain, weak intensity of wrinkling of cotyledon, yellow cotyledon, hilum same colour as testa
Origin & Breeding History: 'LN4228' arose as the result of a cross made in 2006 between 'CEB4132' and 'Kleopatra' at the former breeding station in Lelystad and Rilland, Netherlands. A single plant was selected, followed by single seed descent and replicated yield trials. Selection criteria were yield, resistance to powdery mildew, resistance to lodging and plant height. 'LN4228' was first entered in the Alberta Regional Variety trials in 2014.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted during the summers of 2014 and 2015 in Barrhead, Alberta. Plots were arranged in a non-randomized design with 4 replicates in 4.5 metre long rows. The plot size was 3.6 square metres with a 0.2 metre row spacing. Planting density was 75 plants per square metre. Measured characteristics for each variety were based on 10 measurements per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
