Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Amarillo', 'CDC Golden' and 'CDC Meadow'

Summary: The number of nodes, up to and including the first fertile node, on the stem of the plants of 'CDC Inca' is medium to many whereas it is few to medium for 'CDC Golden' and 'CDC Meadow'. The density of flecking on the stipules of 'CDC Inca' is very sparse whereas it is medium density for 'CDC Golden'. The shape of the base of the standard of 'CDC Inca' is moderately arched whereas it is level on 'CDC Amarillo'. The stem length of 'CDC Inca' is longer than that of 'CDC Golden' and 'CDC Meadow'.

Description:

PLANT: field type, no anthocyanin colouration, no stem fasciation, green colour at flowering, no leaflets, late maturing

STEM: no anthocyanin colouration of axil, medium to many nodes up to and including first fertile node

STIPULE: medium length from axil to tip, absent or very short lobe below axil, very sparse density of flecking

FLOWER: flowers mid-season, two flowers per node
STANDARD: white, moderately arched base, absent or very weak undulation
UPPER SEPAL: medium width

POD: entire parchment, thickened wall absent, blunt distal part, absent or very weak curvature, green when fully swollen, suture strings present
IMMATURE SEED: light green
DRY SEED: ellipsoid shape, simple starch grain, yellow cotyledon, hilum same colour as testa

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Inca' (experimental designation CDC 2847-21) was developed from the cross 'Noble' / 'CDC Golden' // 'Thunderbird' carried out in 2005 at the Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In 2006, a single plant was selected from the F2 population. Yield, days to maturity, days to flower, vine length, resistance to lodging, seed weight, seed size and seed coat breakage, disease resistance, crude protein concentration and cooking time were evaluated in subsequent generations. 'CDC Inca' was entered in and evaluated as '2847-21' in the Field Pea Cooperative Registration Test in 2011 and 2012.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'CDC Inca' were conducted at the Sutherland Field Site by the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the summers of 2014 and 2015. The trials were conducted using a complete randomized block design consisting of 2 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 65 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
