Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Patrick', 'CDC Limerick' and 'CDC Striker'

Summary: The number of nodes, up to and including the first fertile node, on the stem of the plants of 'CDC Spruce' are medium to many whereas that of 'CDC Limerick' and 'CDC Striker' are few to medium. The density of flecking on the stipules of 'CDC Spruce' is medium to dense whereas it is sparse to medium for 'CDC Patrick' and very sparse for 'CDC Limerick'. The pod length of 'CDC Spruce' is longer than that of 'CDC Limerick' and shorter than that of 'CDC Striker'. The shape of the seed of 'CDC Spruce' is cylindrical whereas it is ellipsoid for the reference varieties. The 100 seed weight of 'CDC Spruce' is heavier than that of 'CDC Patrick' and 'CDC Limerick'. The plants of 'CDC Spruce' mature mid-season whereas those of 'CDC Limerick' are late maturing.

Description:

PLANT: field type, no anthocyanin colouration, no stem fasciation, green colour at flowering, no leaflets, matures mid-season

STEM: no anthocyanin colouration of axil, medium to many nodes up to and including first fertile node

STIPULE: medium length from axil to tip, absent or very short lobe below axil, medium to dense flecking

FLOWER: blooms mid-season, two flowers per node
STANDARD: white, moderately arched base, absent or very weak undulation
UPPER SEPAL: narrow to medium width

POD: parchment entire, thickened wall absent, blunt distal part, absent or very weak curvature, medium green when fully swollen, suture strings present
IMMATURE SEED: light green
DRY SEED: cylindrical shape, simple starch grain, green cotyledon, hilum darker than testa

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Spruce' (experimental designation CDC 3007-6) was developed from the cross 'Hugo' / 'Mendel' carried out in 2005 at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In 2006, a single plant was selected from the F2 population. Yield, days to maturity, days to flower, vine length, resistance to lodging, seed weight, seed size and seed coat breakage, disease resistance, crude protein concentration and cooking time were evaluated in subsequent generations. 'CDC Spruce' was entered in and evaluated as '3007-6' in the Field Pea Cooperative Registration Tests in 2012 and 2013.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'CDC Spruce' were conducted at the Sutherland Field Site of the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons. The trials were conducted using a complete randomized block design consisting of 2 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 65 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
