Summary: The density of flecking on the stipules of 'CDC Athabasca' is sparse to medium whereas it is very sparse on 'CDC Meadow'. The base of the flower standard of 'CDC Athabasca' is level whereas that of 'CDC Golden' is moderately arched. The pod length of 'CDC Athabasca' is longer than that of the reference varieties. The stem length of 'CDC Athabasca' is longer than that of 'CDC Golden' and 'CDC Meadow'. The 100 seed weight of 'CDC Athabasca' is heavier than that of the reference varieties.
Description:
PLANT: field type, no anthocyanin colouration, no stem fasciation, green colour at flowering, no leaflets, matures mid-season
STEM: no anthocyanin colouration of axil, few to medium number of nodes up to and including first fertile node
STIPULE: medium to long from axil to tip, absent or very short lobe below axil, sparse to medium density of flecking
FLOWER: blooms mid-season, two flowers per node
STANDARD: white, level base, absent or very weak undulation
UPPER SEPAL: medium width
POD: parchment entire, thickened wall absent, blunt distal part, very weak curvature, medium green when fully swollen, suture strings present
IMMATURE SEED: light green
DRY SEED: ellipsoid shape, simple starch grain, yellow cotyledon, hilum same colour as testa
Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Athabasca' (experimental designation CDC 3094-5) was developed from the cross 'Ceb4151' / '1658-7' carried out in 2006 at the Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In 2007, a single plant was selected from the F2 population. Yield, days to maturity, days to flower, vine length, resistance to lodging, seed weight, seed size and seed coat breakage, disease resistance, crude protein concentration and cooking time were evaluated in subsequent generations. 'CDC Athabasca' was entered in and evaluated as '3094-5' in the Field Pea Cooperative Registration Tests in 2012 and 2013.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'CDC Athabasca' were conducted at the Sutherland Field Site of the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons. The trials were conducted using a complete randomized block design consisting of 2 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 65 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
