Summary: The number of nodes, up to and including the first fertile node, on the stem of 'Redbat 8' is few to medium whereas it is medium to many for 'Redbat 88'. 'Redbat 8' flowers mid-season whereas 'Redbat 88' is late flowering. The pods of 'Redbat 8' are shorter than those of 'Redbat 88'. The stem length of 'Redbat 8' is shorter than that of 'Redbat 88'. The cotyledons of 'Redbat 8' are orange whereas those of 'Meadow' are yellow. The 100 seed weight of 'Redbat 8' is less than that of 'Redbat 88'.
Description:

STIPULE: medium to long from axil to tip, absent or very short lobe below axil, very sparse density of flecking

POD: parchment entire, thickened wall absent, blunt distal part, weak curvature, medium green when fully swollen, suture strings present

Origin & Breeding History: 'Redbat 8' (experimental designation 2710-1) was developed from the cross '8510' / 'CDC Dundurn' // 'CDC Bronco' carried out in 2004 at the Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In 2005, a single plant was selected from the F2 population for orange cotyledon colour. Yield, days to maturity, days to flower, vine length, resistance to lodging and seed weight were evaluated in F3 and subsequent generations.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Redbat 8' were conducted at the Sutherland Field Site of the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons. The trials were conducted using a complete randomized block design consisting of 2 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 65 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
