Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Amarillo', 'CDC Golden' and 'CDC Meadow'
Summary: The stipule of 'CDC Canary' is shorter than the stipule of 'CDC Meadow'. The density of flecking of the stipule of 'CDC Canary' is sparse to medium whereas the density of flecking is very sparse to sparse for 'CDC Meadow'. The shape of the base of the standard is moderately arched for 'CDC Canary' whereas the base of the standard is straight for 'CDC Amarillo'. The pod of 'CDC Canary' is broader than the pod of 'CDC Meadow'. When the plants are fully mature and the seed is green and fully developed, the stem of 'CDC Canary' is longer than the stem of 'CDC Golden'. The shape of the seed of 'CDC Canary' is cylindrical whereas the seed of 'CDC Amarillo', 'CDC Golden' and 'CDC Meadow' is ellipsoid. The seed weight of 'CDC Canary' is greater than the seed weight of 'CDC Golden' and 'CDC Meadow'.
Description:

STEM: no anthocyanin colouration of axil, no fasciation, few to medium number of nodes up to and including first fertile node
LEAFLETS: absent
STIPULE: short from axil to tip, short lobe below axil, sparse to medium density of flecking
FLOWERING: begins early to mid-season
FLOWER: maximum of two per node
STANDARD: white, moderately arched base, absent or very weak undulation
UPPER SEPAL: medium to broad, accuminate apex
POD: entire parchment, no thickened wall, blunt distal part, absent or very weak curvature, green, suture strings present
IMMATURE SEED: light green
SEED: cylindrical shape, simple starch grains, no wrinkling of cotyledons, yellow cotyledons, matures mid-season
HILUM: same colour as testa
Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Canary' (experimental designation '3360-7') resulted from a breeding program based at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It originated from the cross 'CEB4159'/'Carneval' // 'CDC Meadow' made in 2006. From the F2 population of this cross, 'CDC Canary' was selected for its yield, days to seed maturity, days to flowering, vine length, resistance to lodging, seed weight, seed size and resistance to seed coat breakage, disease resistance, crude protein concentration, and cooking time.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials of 'CDC Canary' were conducted during 2015 and 2016 at the Sutherland Research Farm of the University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A two replicate, randomized complete block design was planted with each replication consisting of 3 rows per variety. The rows were 3.66 metres long and the spacing between rows was 0.30 metres. The plot size was 3.35 square metres with a planting density of 65 plants per square metre. Unless otherwise indicated, the measurements were taken from 20 plants or parts of plants for each year of trial.
