Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Patrick', 'CDC Limerick' and 'CDC Striker'

Summary: The stipule of 'CDC Forest' is broader than the stipule of 'CDC Patrick' and 'CDC Striker'. The density of flecking of the stipule is sparse for 'CDC Forest' whereas the density of flecking is medium for 'CDC Patrick'. The shape of the base of the standard is moderately to strongly arched for 'CDC Forest' whereas the base of the standard of 'CDC Limerick' is straight. The pod of 'CDC Forest' is shorter than the pod of 'CDC Patrick' and 'CDC Striker', and larger than the pod of 'CDC Limerick'. The pod of 'CDC Forest' has a greater number of ovules than the pod of 'CDC Limerick'. When the plants are fully mature and the seed is green and fully developed, the stem of 'CDC Forest' is longer than the stem of 'CDC Patrick' and 'CDC Striker'. The shape of the seed of 'CDC Forest' is cylindrical whereas the seed of 'CDC Patrick', 'CDC Limerick' and 'CDC Striker' is ellipsoid. The seed weight for 'CDC Forest' is greater than the seed weight for 'CDC Patrick' and 'CDC Limerick'.

Description:

PLANT: field type, no anthocyanin colouration, green
STEM: no anthocyanin colouration of axil, no fasciation, medium number of nodes up to and including first fertile node

LEAFLETS: absent
STIPULE: short lobe below axil, sparse flecking

FLOWERING: begins mid-season
FLOWER: maximum of two per node
STANDARD: white, moderately arched base, absent or very weak undulation
UPPER SEPAL: medium width, accuminate apex

POD: entire parchment, no thickened wall, blunt distal part, very weak to weak curvature, green, suture strings present
IMMATURE SEED: light green
SEED: cylindrical shape, simple starch grains, no wrinkling of cotyledons, green cotyledons, matures mid-season to late
HILUM: darker than testa

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Forest' (experimental designation '3422-8') resulted from a breeding program based at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It originated from the cross 'CDC Bronco'/'Nitouche' // 'Argus' made in 2006. From the F2 population of this cross, 'CDC Forest' was selected for its yield, days to seed maturity, days to flowering, vine length, resistance to lodging, seed weight, seed size and resistance to seed coat breakage, resistance to cotyledon bleaching, disease resistance, crude protein concentration, and cooking time.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials of 'CDC Forest' were conducted during 2015 and 2016 at the Sutherland Research Farm of the University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A two replicate, randomized complete block design was planted with each replication consisting of 3 rows per variety. The rows were 3.66 metres long and the spacing between rows was 0.30 metres. The plot size was 3.35 square metres with a planting density of 65 plants per square metre. Unless otherwise indicated, the measurements were taken from 20 plants or parts of plants for each year of trial.
