Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Cooper'
Summary: When thirty percent of the plants have one open flower, the plants of 'AAC Comfort' are taller than the plants of 'Cooper'. The pod of 'AAC Comfort' has fewer ovules than the pod of 'Cooper'. When the plants are fully mature and the seed is green and fully developed, the stem of 'AAC Comfort' is longer than the stem of 'Cooper'.
Description:
PLANT: field type, no anthocyanin colouration, green
STEM: no anthocyanin colouration of axil, no fasciation, many nodes up to and including first fertile node
LEAFLETS: absent
STIPULE: short to medium length from axil to tip, very short to medium length of lobe below axil, sparse to very sparse flecking
FLOWERING: begins mid to late season
FLOWER: maximum of two per node
STANDARD: white, straight shape of base, absent or very weak undulation
UPPER SEPAL: acute apex
POD: parchment absent, no thickened wall, blunt distal part, very weak curvature, green, suture strings present
IMMATURE SEED: light green
SEED: simple starch grains, green cotyledons, matures mid-season to late
HILUM: same colour as testa
AGRONOMIC: resistance to powdery mildew
Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Comfort' (experimental designation 'P0511-06') resulted from a breeding program based at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Lacombe Research Centre, in Lacombe, Alberta. It originated from the cross 'Polstead' by 'Tamora' made in 2005 using pedigree selection in combination with single seed descent. 'AAC Comfort' was selected for its maturity, yield, resistance to lodging, seed shape, seed size, and green seed colour. In 2013-2014, 'AAC Comfort' was entered into the Western Canada Field Pea Cooperative Registration Test-A and evaluated at 22 location-years. Breeder seed was produced from the F10 generation.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials of 'AAC Comfort' were conducted during 2015 and 2016 at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Lacombe Research Centre, in Lacombe, Alberta. A four replicate, randomized complete block design was planted with each replication consisting of 1 row per variety. The rows were 5 metres long and the spacing between rows was 0.25 metres. The plot size was 5 square metres with a planting density of 85 plants per square metre. Unless otherwise indicated, the measurements were taken from 20 plants or parts of plants for each year of trial.
