Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Akura'
Summary: The plants of 'CDC 4140-4' have a maximum of two flowers per node while 'Akura' has a maximum of three. On average, 'CDC 4140-4' has less ovules per pod than 'Akura'. When the seed is green and fully developed, the stem for 'CDC 4140-4' is longer than that of 'Akura'. When hard and dry, the cotyledons for 'CDC 4140-4' have a medium degree of wrinkling while the cotyledons of 'Akura' have a strong degree of wrinkling. The 100 seed weight for 'CDC 4140-4' is greater than that of 'Akura'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC 4140-4' originated from the cross ('Akura' / 'Mendel') / 'CDC 1410-15' conducted in 2008 at the Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It was developed from a single plant selection from the F2 population. 'CDC 4140-4' was selected for its yield, days to maturity, days to flowering, vine length, resistance to lodging, seed weight, seed size, disease resistance and crude protein concentration.
Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials for 'CDC 4140-4' were conducted at the Sutherland Field Site of the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons. The trials were established using a complete randomized block design consisting of 2 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 65 seeds per square metre. The measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year and there were 8 measurements taken for 100 seed weight. The mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
