Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Lacombe' and 'Agassiz'
Summary: On fully mature plants, the stem of 'AAC Profit' has many nodes up to and including the first fertile node whereas 'AAC Lacombe' has very many nodes up to and including the first fertile node. The petiole length from axil to first leaflet or tendril is longer on 'AAC Profit' than that of 'Agassiz'. The peduncle length on 'AAC Profit' is longer than the peduncle on 'AAC Lacombe'.
Description:
PLANT: field type, green colour at flowering, semi-leafless
STEM: many number of nodes up to and including first fertile node, no anthocyanin colouration of axil, no fasciation,
STIPULE: medium size, very sparse flecking
FLOWER: blooms mid to late season, two flowers per node
STANDARD: white, moderately to strongly arched
POD: entire parchment, absent or very weak curvature, blunt distal portion, green when fully swollen
IMMATURE SEED: medium green
DRY SEED: ellipsoid shape, simple starch grain, yellow cotyledon, hilum same colour as testa
DISEASE REACTION: resistant to powdery mildew (Erysiphe pisi Syd.)
Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Profit' (experimental designation MP1907) is the result of the cross 'CDC715S-4' / 'MP1816'' made in 2003 in the greenhouse at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Research Station in Morden, Manitoba. The breeding method was pedigree selection in combination with single seed descent. In 2011 and 2012, MP1907 was evaluated in a replicated yield test in Western Canada Field Pea Cooperative Registration Test-A and evaluated for yield, maturity, lodging, plant height, seed weight, seed shape, seed coat integrity, protein content and the reactions to diseases of Mycosphaerella blight, Fusarium wilt and Powdery mildew.
Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials for 'AAC Profit' were conducted at the Lacombe Research and Development Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Lacombe, Alberta, during the 2018 and 2019 growing seasons. The trials were established using a randomized complete block design consisting of 4 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 4 rows spaced 25 cm apart, with a row length of 5 metres and a planting density of 85 viable seeds per square metre. The measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year except 100 seed weight where 4 measurements were taken per variety per year. The mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
