Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'CDC Horizon'

Summary: The plants of 'DL Goldeye' have leaflets present while those of 'CDC Horizon' do not. The stipule of 'DL Goldeye' is large, and wider than that of 'CDC Horizon' which is small. From the axil to the tip, the stipule of 'DL Goldeye' is long while that of 'CDC Horizon' is of medium length. From the axil to the first leaflet, the petiole of 'DL Goldeye' is shorter than that of 'CDC Horizon'. The base of the standard of the flower of 'DL Goldeye' is moderately raised while that of 'CDC Horizon' is level to moderately arched. The pod of 'DL Goldeye' has a medium degree of curvature while the pod of 'CDC Horizon' has weak curvature. At maturity, the stem of 'DL Goldeye' is longer than that of 'CDC Horizon'. The hilum seed colour of 'DL Goldeye' is darker than the testa while that of 'CDC Horizon' is the same colour as the testa.

Origin & Breeding History: 'DL Goldeye' originated from the cross between 'Livioletta' and the F1 of 'Florida x 'Grapis' conducted in 2001 at the breeding station of Norddentsche Pflanzenzucht breeding in Hohenlieth, Germany. In 2004, a single plant was selected from the F6 generation for its straw stiffness, plant length, early vigour, seed size and hilum colour. It was multiplied and tested in several environments and yield trials and purified during the next generations.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'DL Goldeye' were conducted at the DL Seeds Research Station, in Morden, Manitoba during the 2020 and 2021 growing seasons. The trials were arranged in a RCB design consisting of 3 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 6 rows spaced 17 cm apart, with a row length of 4 metres and a planting density of 80 seeds per square metre. The measured characteristics were based on 100 measurements per variety per year. The mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
