Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'MFR131', 'MFR171', 'CDC S110-22' and 'CDC S120-22'

Summary: The stipule of ‘CDC Prim' is shorter and narrower than the stipule of ‘MFR131' and shorter than that of ‘MFR171'. The stipule of ‘CDC Prim' has medium to dense flecking while the stipule of ‘MFR171' has dense to very dense flecking. The maximum width of the standard on the flower of ‘CDC Prim' is narrower than those of ‘MFR131' and ‘CDC S120-22'. The maximum width of the pod of ‘CDC Prim' is narrower than those of ‘MFR131', ‘CDC S110-22' and ‘CDC S120-22'. The one hundred seed weight of ‘CDC Prim' is greater than those of the reference varieties.

Description:

PLANT: field type, no anthocyanin colouration, no stem fasciation, green foliage, flowers early in the season

STEM: no anthocyanin colouration of axil, medium length at maturity, medium number of nodes up to and including the first fertile node

LEAF: leaflets absent
STIPULE: medium length from axil to tip, medium width, short to medium length lobe below axil, medium to dense flecking

FLOWER: maximum of two per node
STANDARD: white, medium width, level base, weak undulation
UPPER SEPAL: broad, acute apex

POD: medium length, medium width, entire parchment, blunt shape of distal part, absent or very weak curvature, light to medium green, medium number of ovules
IMMATURE SEED: light to medium green
DRY SEED: cylindrical, simple starch grains, no wrinkling of cotyledon, green cotyledon, medium to high weight, matures mid to late season
HILUM: same colour as testa

Origin & Breeding History: ‘CDC Prim' (experimental designation 1513-2) originated from a three-way cross conducted at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The initial cross between the variety ‘Polstead' and the line 993-2 was conducted in 2013 with the resulting progeny being crossed with the line 1048-1 in 2014. From a single F2 plant, the variety was advanced to the F8 generation based on grain yield, days to maturity time, vine length, lodging resistance, disease resistance, seed weight, resistance to seed coat breakage and resistance to cotyledon bleaching with one F4 line being designated 1513-2 in 2017. Breeder seed was established from 15 F9 sublines in 2022.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘CDC Prim' were conducted at the Sutherland Field Site of the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. The trial consisted of 2 replicates per variety in the 2023 season and 4 replicates per variety in the 2024 season, both arranged in a RCB design. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows, measuring 3.66 metres long and spaced 30 cm apart. The planting density of 84 seeds per square metre resulted in a minimum of 550 plants per variety per year. The measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 20 measurements per variety in 2023 and 40 measurements in 2024, except for seed weight which was based on a minimum of 8 measurements per variety in 2023 and 16 measurements in 2024. The mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
