Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'CDC Horizon'
Summary: The plants of Rubicon' have anthocyanin colouration present whereas the plants of CDC Horizon' have no anthocyanin colouration. The stipule of Rubicon' is longer and wider than those of CDC Horizon'. The density of flecking on the stipule of Rubicon' is medium to dense whereas it is very sparse to sparse for CDC Horizon'. Flowering occurs late in the season for the plants of Rubicon' whereas it occurs mid-season for the plants of CDC Horizon'. The flower of Rubicon' has a reddish-purple wing whereas the flower of CDC Horizon' has a white wing. The pod of Rubicon' is longer and wider than the pod of CDC Horizon'. The shape of the distal part of the pod of Rubicon' is blunt whereas that of CDC Horizon' is pointed. At maturity, the stem of Rubicon' is longer than that of CDC Horizon'.
Description:
PLANT: field type, anthocyanin colouration present, medium intensity of green foliage at flowering, flowers late season
STEM: single ring of anthocyanin colouration on axil, fasciation absent, many nodes up to and including the first fertile node
LEAF: leaflets absent
STIPULE: medium size, medium length from axil to tip, medium to long lobe below axil, medium to dense flecking
PEDUNCLE: absent or few bracts
FLOWER: maximum of two per node
WING: reddish purple
STANDARD: level to moderately arched base, weak to medium degree of undulation
UPPER SEPAL: medium to broad
POD: absent or partial parchment, no thickened wall, blunt shape of distal part, absent or very weak curvature, medium green when fully swollen, suture strings absent
IMMATURE SEED: medium green intensity
DRY SEED: ellipsoid, simple starch grains, yellow cotyledon, marbling of testa absent, no violet or pink spots on testa, matures mid-season
HILUM: same colour as testa
Origin & Breeding History: Rubicon' (experimental designation RLP16517) originated from the cross between Livioletta' and the F1 of Florida' and Pinocchio' conducted in 2002 at the breeding station of Norddeutsche Pflanzenzücht breeding in Hohenlieth, Germany. Following five self-pollinating generations, a single F6 plant was selected in 2008 based on its standability, plant length, seed size, seed colour, flower colour and semi-leafless characteristic. It was multiplied and tested in several environments to assess early vigour, total dry matter yield, disease resistance, seed yields and protein content as additional selection criteria and purified during the F7 to F10 generations. Breeder seed was established after the F10 generation in 2011.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for Rubicon' were conducted at the DL Seeds Research Station in Morden, Manitoba during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons. The trials were arranged in a RCB design consisting of 3 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 6 rows spaced 23 cm apart, with a row length of 4 metres and a planting density of 80 seeds per square metre. The measured characteristics were based on 100 measurements per variety per year except for the 100 seed weight where 3 measurements were taken per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
