Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'MFR131', 'MFR171' and 'CDC S120-22'

Summary: The density of flecking on the stipule of 'CDC S110-22' is dense to very dense whereas that of 'CDC S120-22' is medium to dense. The plants of 'CDC S110-22' flower later than those of 'CDC S120-22'. The maximum width of the flower standard of 'CDC S110-22' is narrower than that of 'MFR131'. The shape of the apex on the upper sepal of 'CDC S110-22' is acuminate to acute while that of 'MFR131' is rounded. The maximum pod width of 'CDC S110-22' is wider that that of 'MFR171'. The pod of 'CDC S110-22' has fewer ovules than the pod of 'MFR171'. The one hundred seed weight of 'CDC S110-22' is greater than those of the reference varieties.

Description:

STEM: anthocyanin colouration of axil absent, fasciation absent, medium number of nodes up to and including the first fertile node

LEAF: leaflets absent
STIPULE: medium to long from axil to tip, medium length lobe below axil, dense to very dense flecking

FLOWER: maximum of two per node
STANDARD: white, level base, weak undulation
UPPER SEPAL: broad, acuminate to acute apex

POD: entire parchment, no thickened wall, pointed distal part, absent or very weak curvature, medium green when fully swollen, suture strings present
IMMATURE SEED: light to medium green intensity
DRY SEED: cylindrical, simple starch grains, wrinkling of cotyledon absent, green cotyledon, matures mid to late season
HILUM: same colour as testa

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC S110-22' (experimental designation 1174-3) originated from the F2 population of a cross between the varieties 'MFR131' and 'Genki' conducted in 2009 at the University of Saskatchewan, Crop Development Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The variety was advanced based on seed yield and weight, time of flowering and maturity, vine length and lodging resistance as well as disease resistance. Breeder seed was established from 27 sub-lines at the F9 generation in 2017.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'CDC S120-22' were conducted in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons. The trials were arranged in a RCB design consisting of 2 replications per variety. Each plot was 3.35 square metres with rows 3.36 metres long spaced 0.3 metres apart. The measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year except for the 100 seed weight where 8 measurements were taken per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
