Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Tollefson' and 'CDC Inca'
Summary: The pod of CDC Canuck' is longer than the pod of CDC Inca'. Before seed development, the pod of CDC Canuck' has more ovules than the pod of CDC Inca'. The one hundred seed weight of CDC Canuck' is less than the one hundred seed weight of CDC Tollefson' and greater than that of CDC Inca'. The seed of CDC Canuck' matures earlier than the seed of CDC Tollefson'.
Description:
PLANT: field type, no anthocyanin colouration, no stem fasciation, green foliage, flowers mid-season
STEM: no anthocyanin colouration of axil, medium to tall at maturity, ranging between medium and medium to many nodes up to and including the first fertile node
LEAF: leaflets absent
STIPULE: short to medium length from axil to tip, medium width, short to medium length lobe below axil, ranging between medium and medium to dense flecking
FLOWER: maximum of two per node
STANDARD: white, medium width, moderatley to strongly arched base, weak undulation
UPPER SEPAL: ranging between medium and medium to broad, acuminate apex
POD: medium length and width, entire parchment, blunt distal part, weak curvature, light to medium green, medium to many ovules
IMMATURE SEED: ranging between light to medium and medium green
DRY SEED: ellipsoid, simple starch grains, yellow cotyledon, medium weight, matures mid-season
HILUM: same colour as testa
Origin & Breeding History: CDC Canuck' (experimental designation CDC 6471-2) originated from a cross conducted in 2017 between the varieties CDC Tollefson' and CDC Inca' at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. From a single F2 plant, the variety was advanced to the F8 generation from selections based on grain yield, days to flowering, days to maturity, vine length, lodging resistance, disease resistance, seed weight and resistance to seed coat breakage with one F7 Line designated CDC 6471-2 in 2022. Breeder seed was established from 21 F9 sublines in 2024.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for CDC Canuck' were conducted at the Sutherland Field Site of the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2024 and 2025 growing seasons. The trial consisted of 4 replicates per variety arranged in a RCB design. Each plot consisted of 3 rows, each row measuring 3.66 metres with 30 cm inter-row spacing. The planting density of 84 seeds per square metre resulted in a minimum of 550 plants per variety per year. The measured characteristics were based on 40 measurements per year, except for seed weight which was based on 16 measurements per variety, per year. The mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
