Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Profit' and 'Earlystar'

Summary: The stipule of ‘AAC Harrison' is narrower than that of ‘Earlystar'. The maximum width of the standard on the flower of ‘AAC Harrison' is wider than that of ‘Earlystar'. The base of the standard on the flower of ‘AAC Harrison' is moderately arched while that of ‘Earlystar' is level. The peduncle of ‘AAC Harrison' is shorter than that of ‘AAC Profit'. The maximum width of the pod of ‘AAC Harrison' is broader than those of the reference varieties. The thousand seed weight of ‘AAC Harrison' is greater than that of ‘Earlystar'. The seed of ‘AAC Harrison' matures later than that of ‘Earlystar'.

UPPER SEPAL: acuminate apex

POD: medium length and width, entire parchment, blunt shape of distal part, absent or very weak curvature, green, medium number of ovules

Origin & Breeding History: ‘AAC Harrison' (experimental designation P1209-2119) originated from the cross between the varieties ‘Earlystar' and ‘AAC Profit' conducted in 2012 at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Lacombe Research and Development Centre in Lacombe, Alberta. The variety was advanced using a pedigreed selection in combination with a modified single seed decent method of plant breeding. One F7 line, designated P1209-2119, was selected in 2017 based on maturity time, pod canopy, plant height, lodging resistance and disease resistance and again assessed and selected in 2018 based on yield and maturity time. The line was further tested in 2019 in yield trials in multiple locations in Western Canada and subsequently entered in the Western Canada Field Pea Cooperative Variety Registration Test in 2021 and 2022. Breeder seed was established from a single F13 line in 2023.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘AAC Harrison' were conducted at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Lacombe Research and Development Centre in Lacombe, Alberta during the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. The trials consisted of 4 replicates in a RCB design. Each replicate consisted of 4 rows, with each row measuring 5 metres long and spaced 25 cm apart. A planting density of 85 viable seeds per square metre resulted in approximately 1700 plants per variety per year. The measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year except for the 1000 seed weight where 4 measurements were taken per variety per year. The mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
