Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Olive' and 'Bibao'

Summary: At flowering, the stem of ‘AAC Trakalo' has fewer nodes than that of ‘AAC Olive'. The stipule of ‘AAC Trakalo' is wider than that of ‘AAC Olive'. The plants of ‘AAC Trakalo' flower earlier than the plants of ‘AAC Olive' and later than those of ‘Bibao'. The maximum width of the standard on the flower of ‘AAC Trakalo' is wider than that of ‘AAC Olive'. The peduncle of ‘AAC Trakalo' is longer than that of ‘AAC Olive'. The pod of ‘AAC Trakalo' is shorter than those of the reference varieties and narrower than that of ‘AAC Olive'. The pod of ‘AAC Trakalo' has fewer ovules than the pods of the reference varieties. At maturity, the stem of ‘AAC Trakalo' is longer than that of ‘AAC Olive'.

Origin & Breeding History: ‘AAC Trakalo' (experimental designation P1230-3352) originated from the cross between the variety ‘Kahuna' and the line P0604-02 conducted in 2012 at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Lacombe Research and Development Centre in Lacombe, Alberta. The variety was advanced using a pedigreed selection in combination with a modified single seed decent method of plant breeding. In 2018, one F8 line designated P1230-3352 was selected based on standability, maturity time, pod size, seed size and disease resistance and further assessed in 2019 in Lethbridge and Lacombe, Alberta. Replicated trials were also conducted to assess the line at multiple locations in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta in 2021 and 2022. Breeder seed was established from a single F11 line in 2023.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘AAC Trakalo' were conducted at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Lacombe Research and Development Centre in Lacombe, Alberta during the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. The trials consisted of 4 replicates in a RCB design. Each replicate consisted of 4 rows, with each row measuring 5 metres long and spaced 25 cm apart. A planting density of 85 viable seeds per square metre resulted in approximately 1700 plants per variety per year. The measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. The mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
