Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Royce' and 'CDC Forest'
Summary: The stipule of AAC Hagen' is shorter than the stipule of AAC Royce' and longer than that of CDC Forest'. The stipule of AAC Hagen' is narrower than those of AAC Royce' and CDC Forest'. From the stem to the first pod, the peduncle of AAC Hagen' is shorter than the peduncle of AAC Royce'. The pod of AAC Hagen' is longer than the pod of CDC Forest'. Before seed development, the pod of AAC Hagen' has more ovules than the pod of CDC Forest'. At maturity, the stem of AAC Hagen' is shorter than the stem of CDC Forest'. The one hundred seed weight of AAC Hagen' is greater than the one hundred seed weight of CDC Forest'.

Origin & Breeding History: AAC Hagen' (experimental designation P1222-2923) originated from a cross conducted between the varieties Cooper' and AAC Royce' at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Lacombe Research and Development Centre in Lacombe, Alberta in 2012. The variety was developed using a pedigree selection method of breeding in combination with single seed descent. The variety was advanced to the F7 generation based on maturity, lodging resistance, yield and disease resistance. One F7 line, designated as P1222-2923, was assessed for yield in multiple locations in Western Canada in 2019 and entered in the Western Canada Field Pea Cooperative Registration Test from 2021 to 2023. Breeder seed was established from the F12 generation in 2024.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for AAC Hagen' were conducted at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Lacombe Research and Development Centre in Lacombe, Alberta during the 2024 and 2025 growing seasons. The trial consisted of 4 replicates per variety arranged in a RCB design. Each plot consisted of 4 rows, each row measuring 5 metres with 23 cm inter-row spacing. The planting density of 85 seeds per square metre resulted in approximately 1550 plants per variety per year. The measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per year, except for seed weight which was based on 4 measurements per variety, per year. The mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
