Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: ‘Fisdino'

Summary: ‘Fisromag' produces more narrow plants with more narrow leaves than ‘Fisdino'. ‘Fisromag' produces an inflorescence with a shorter peduncle than ‘Fisdino'. Flower colour for ‘Fisromag' is reddish-violet while it is less reddish for ‘Fisdino'. Shape of the floret for ‘Fisromag' is more round with petals that are more touching than for those of ‘Fisdino'. ‘Fisromag has a white zone at the base of the upper petals whereas ‘Fisdino' does not. Colour of the middle third of the pedicel for ‘Fisromag' is medium red while it is light red for ‘Fisdino'.

Description:

‘Fisromag' is a zonal pelargonium variety. ‘Fisromag' has an intermediate growth habit and medium thick, green stems. The leaf blade shape is type one with an open base and bi-crenate margins. The leaves are medium green in colour with no variegation. The reddish-brown leaf zone is weakly conspicuous.

Time of beginning of flowering for ‘Fisromag' is mid-season. ‘Fisromag' produces red-violet coloured inflorescences. The flower bud is elliptic in shape and the florets are semi-double. The petal margin is entire. Width of the upper petal is medium in size. There is a small sized, white to faded salmon coloured zone at the base of the upper petals. There are very weak to weakly conspicuous macule (spotted) markings on the upper petals, weakly conspicuous macule (spotted) markings on the lower petals and absent to present markings on the inner petals. The middle third of the pedicel is medium red in colour. There is no swelling of the pedicel.

Origin & Breeding History: ‘Fisromag' originated from a hybridization between the female parent, hybrid seedling no. 1960-1 (derived from a cross of variety ‘Fisdino' and a violet flowered seedling), and the male parent, variety ‘Violetta', made in Galdar, Gran Canaria, Spain in 1996. One seedling within the offspring was selected in 1997. Cuttings from the selected seedling were then taken back to Hillscheid, Germany for further selection and trial cultivation in 1998.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for ‘Fisromag' were conducted in a greenhouse during the spring/summer of 2001 in Langley, British Columbia. The trials included a minimum of ten plants per variety. All plants were grown from 6 week old rooted cuttings transplanted into 9 cm pots at 10 weeks using a 60:40 (peat : perlite) media mixture. At 16 weeks, the plants were repotted to 18 cm pots. Plants were spaced as needed to ensure uniform growth. Unless indicated otherwise, measured characteristics were based on 10 measurements.
