Summary: 'KLEP01042' has a more spreading growth habit than 'Global Merlot'. The leaves are larger in 'KLEP01042' than in 'Global Merlot'. 'KLEP01042' has a longer peduncle than 'Global Merlot'. The diameter of the floret is smaller in 'KLEP01042' than in 'Global Merlot'.
Description:
'KLEP01042' is an ivy type pelargonium variety. The stem is green in colour, thin in thickness and has medium pubescence. The base of the leaf blade is closed. The leaf blade margins are entire with weak to medium lobing and weak margin waviness. There is sparse to medium pubescence on the upper side of the leaf blade. The colour of the leaf blade is light to medium green with no variegation. The leaf petiole has medium pubescence.
'KLEP01042' has medium pubescence on the peduncle. The flower buds are elliptic in shape. The florets are double and burgundy in colour. The petal margins are entire. 'KLEP01042' has no markings on the upper, lower, and inner petals. There is a very small to small white zone at the base of the upper petals. The pedicel has medium pubescence and the colour in the middle third is green. The sepals have medium to dense pubescence and are green in colour.
Origin & Breeding History: 'KLEP01042' originated from a controlled cross with the female parent 'PL 707' by the male parent 'Kleblue' made in 1997, in Stuttgart, Germany. Seedlings were selected in 1998 based on double dark-red flowers, and plants with medium to strong growth. It was evaluated at indoor trials in Stuttgart, Germany in 1999 for good branching, vegetative propagation, quality of flowers, pot performance, and earliness. An outdoor trial was conducted in the summer of 1999 and selection criteria were outdoor performance, quantity of flowers, and resistance to weather, disease, and pests.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'KLEP01042' were conducted in a poly house during the spring/summer of 2002 in St. Thomas, Ontario. Trials consisted of 15 plants per variety grown from rooted cuttings, transplanted into 10 cm pots at week 17. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 RHS colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
