Varieties used for comparison: 'Fisorangtan' (Tango Orange Old) and 'TOSTD0188' (Fantasia Orange)

Summary: The foliage on the plants of 'PEQZ0078' is narrower than that of both reference varieties. The sinus of the leaf blade of 'PEQZ0078' is a medium depth whereas for 'Fisorangtan' it is shallow. The undulation of the margin of the leaf blade of 'PEQZ0078' is medium whereas for 'Fisorangtan' it is strong. The conspicuousness of the zone on the leaf blade of 'PEQZ0078' ranges from absent or very weak to medium whereas for 'TOSTD0188' it is strong. The zone on the leaf blade of 'PEQZ0078' is positioned in the middle whereas for 'Fisorangtan' it is towards the margin. The zone on the leaf blade of 'PEQZ0078' is medium to large whereas that of 'TOSTD0188' is small. The inflorescences of 'PEQZ0078' have few open flowers whereas those of 'TOSTD0188' have medium to many open flowers. The largest flower in the inflorescence of 'PEQZ0078' is wider that those of both reference varieties.

INFLORESCENCE: few open flowers
PEDICEL: very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration on upper third, no swelling
SEPAL: moderate to strong reflexing, weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration at middle of broadest sepal
FLOWER: double type, few to medium number of petals, concave in cross-section in lateral view, no irregularly distributed stripes or blotches
UPPER PETAL: obtriangular, entire margin at apex
UPPER PETAL (INNER SIDE): margin and middle are light red (closest to RHS N30A), medium to strong conspicuousness of veins, small red pink zone at base
UPPER PETAL (OUTER SIDE): light red (RHS 40A) to orange red (RHS 41B-C) towards middle and base
LOWER PETAL (INNER SIDE): margin is light red (closest to RHS N30A), middle is light red (RHS 41A), medium conspicuousness of veins, small white zone at base
LOWER PETAL (OUTER SIDE): medium red (RHS 43A) at middle to red pink (RHS 43C) to pink (RHS 43D) towards base
INNER PETAL (INNER SIDE): light red (closest to RHS N30A)

Origin & Breeding History: 'PEQZ0078' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Ronald Snijder, in Enkhuizen, the Netherlands in July 2015. The cross was made between the female parent, a proprietary seedling designated as 'PEZ-AZ3272-07', and the male parent, a proprietary seedling designated as '11063-1'. The resultant seed was sown in December 2015. A single unique seedling was selected in May 2016 based on plant growth habit, flower colour, flower type and tolerance to heat and drought.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'PEQZ0078' was conducted in a polyhouse at BioFlora in St. Thomas, Ontario during the summer of 2021. The trial included 15 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 22, 2021. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 16, 2021. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
