Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'PEQZ0009' (Calliope Large Pink)

Summary: The foliage of the plants of 'PEQZ0094' is narrower than that of ‘PEQZ0009'. The leaf blade of 'PEQZ0094' is shorter than that of ‘PEQZ0009'. The inflorescence of 'PEQZ0094' is wider than that of ‘PEQZ0009'. The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration on the upper third of the pedicel of ‘PEQZ0094' is strong while that of ‘PEQZ0009' is weak to medium. The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration at the middle of the broadest sepal of ‘PEQZ0094' is medium while that of ‘PEQZ0009' is absent or very weak. The middle of the inner side of the upper petal of 'PEQZ0094' is medium purple while that of ‘PEQZ0009' is medium purple red.

UPPER PETAL: obtriangular to spatulate shape, entire margin at apex
UPPER PETAL (INNER SIDE): margin is medium purple (closest to RHS N74A), middle is medium purple (lighter than RHS N74A), medium conspicuousness of stripes only, large white zone at base
UPPER PETAL (OUTER SIDE): margin is dark blue pink (RHS 67C), middle is medium blue pink (RHS 73B), base is light blue pink (RHS 73D)
LOWER PETAL (INNER SIDE): margin and middle is medium purple (RHS N57A), absent or very weak conspicuousness of stripes only/markings, no zone at base

Origin & Breeding History: 'PEQZ0094' originated from a cross conducted between the female parent variety ‘Patriot Rose Pink', and the male parent, a proprietary breeding line designated as 'PEI-AZ3160-01' in California, USA in July 2014. The resultant seed was sown in December 2014. The new variety was selected in May 2015 based on plant growth habit, plant vigour, foliage colour, flower colour and type.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'PEQZ0094' was conducted in a polyhouse at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario during the spring of 2024. The trial included 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 26, 2024. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 7, 2024. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
