Variety used for comparison: 'Amri Trared' (Calliope Large Dark Red)

Summary: The leaf blade of 'PEQZ0095' is smaller than that of ‘Amri Trared'. The conspicuousness of the zone on the leaf blade of 'PEQZ0095' is medium to strong whereas it is absent or very weak to weak for ‘Amri Trared'. The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration on the middle third of the peduncle of ‘PEQZ0095' is medium while that of ‘Amri Trared' is absent or very weak. The largest flower of the inflorescence of 'PEQZ0095' is shorter than that of ‘Amri Trared'. The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration at the middle of the broadest sepal of ‘PEQZ0095' is strong while that of ‘Amri Trared' is absent or very weak. The margin of the inner side of the upper petal of 'PEQZ0095' is dark red while that of ‘Amri Trared' is dark purple red. The middle of the inner side of the upper petal of 'PEQZ0095' is dark red while that of ‘Amri Trared' is darker red.

UPPER PETAL: spatulate shape, entire margin at apex

Origin & Breeding History: 'PEQZ0095' originated from a cross conducted between the female parent, a proprietary breeding line designated as 'PEZ-AZ3272-07V' and the male parent variety ‘Mambo', in California, USA in July 2015. The resultant seed was sown in December 2015. The new variety was selected in May 2016 based on plant growth habit, plant vigour, foliage colour, flower colour and type.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'PEQZ0095' was conducted in a polyhouse at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario during the spring of 2024. The trial included 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 26, 2024. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 7, 2024. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
