Variety used for comparison: 'Cante Ros' (Caliente Rose)

Summary: The leaf blade of 'PEQZ0097' is larger than that of ‘Cante Ros'. The conspicuousness of the zone on the leaf blade of 'PEQZ0097' is medium to strong whereas it is weak for ‘Cante Ros'. The inflorescence of 'PEQZ0097' is taller than that of ‘Cante Ros'. The largest flower of the inflorescence of 'PEQZ0097' is longer than that of ‘Cante Ros'. The margin of the inner side of the upper petal of 'PEQZ0097' is medium purple while that of ‘Cante Ros' is medium purple red. The outer side of the upper petal of 'PEQZ0097' is medium purple while that of ‘Cante Ros' is medium blue pink. The flower colour of 'PEQZ0097' changes from white to pink with age while that of ‘Cante Ros' is always pink.

INFLORESCENCE: few to medium number of open flowers
PEDICEL: strong to very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration on upper third, no swelling
SEPAL: strong reflexing, strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration at middle of broadest sepal
FLOWER: single type, free arrangement of upper petals in relation to lower petals, flat in cross-section in lateral view, no irregularly distributed stripes or blotches, colour changes from white to pink with age
UPPER PETAL: obtriangular to spatulate shape, entire margin at apex
UPPER PETAL (INNER SIDE): margin is medium purple (closest to RHS N74A), middle is dark blue pink (closest to RHS 72C), absent or very weak conspicuousness of stripes only, small white zone at base
UPPER PETAL (OUTER SIDE): medium purple (closest to RHS 71D)

Origin & Breeding History: 'PEQZ0097' originated from a cross conducted between two proprietary breeding lines, the female parent designated as 'PEIBC1104-1V' and the male parent designated as ‘PEIBD1411-1V', in California, USA, in August 2017. The resultant seed was sown in December 2017. The new variety was selected in May 2018 based on plant growth habit, plant vigour, foliage colour, flower colour and type.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'PEQZ0097' was conducted in a polyhouse at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario during the spring of 2024. The trial included 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 26, 2024. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 7, 2024. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
