Variety used for comparison: 'PEQZ0027' (Calliope Medium Violet)

Summary: The inflorescence of 'PEQZ0098' is taller than that of ‘PEQZ0027'. The pedicel of the inflorescence of 'PEQZ0098' has swelling while that of ‘PEQZ0027' has no swelling. The reflexing of the sepal of 'PEQZ0098' is strong while it is absent or very weak for ‘PEQZ0027'. The conspicuousness of stripes and spot/spots on the inner side of the upper petal of 'PEQZ0098' is weak while it is medium for that of ‘PEQZ0027'. The largest spot on the inner side of the upper petal of 'PEQZ0098' is small to medium sized while it is large for that of ‘PEQZ0027'. The conspicuousness of markings on the inner side of the upper petal of 'PEQZ0098' is absent or very weak while it is weak to medium for that of ‘PEQZ0027'.

FLOWER: double type, many petals, flat in cross-section in lateral view, no irregularly distributed stripes or blotches, colour changes from white to pink with age
UPPER PETAL: obtriangular to spatulate shape, entire margin at apex

Origin & Breeding History: 'PEQZ0098' originated from a cross conducted between two proprietary breeding lines, the female parent designated as 'PEIBC1104-1V' and the male parent designated as ‘PEIBD1411-1V', in California, USA in August 2017. The resultant seed was sown in December 2017. The new variety was selected in May 2018 based on plant growth habit, plant vigour, foliage colour, flower colour and type.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'PEQZ0098' was conducted in a polyhouse at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario during the spring of 2024. The trial included 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 26, 2024. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 7, 2024. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
