Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'PEQZ0044' (Calliope Medium Hot Pink)

Summary: The pedicel of the inflorescence of ‘PEQZ0101' has swelling while that of ‘PEQZ0044' has no swelling. The upper petal of the inflorescence of ‘PEQZ0101' is wider than that of ‘PEQZ0044'. The margin and middle of the inner side of the upper petal of 'PEQZ0101' is medium purple while that of ‘PEQZ0044' is medium purple red. The inner side of the upper petal of 'PEQZ0101' has stripes and spot/spots while that of ‘PEQZ0044' has stripes only. The zone at the base of the upper petal of 'PEQZ0101' is white to red pink while that of ‘PEQZ0044' is red pink to orange red.

FLOWER: double type, few petals, flat in cross-section in lateral view, no irregularly distributed stripes or blotches
UPPER PETAL: spatulate shape, entire margin at apex
UPPER PETAL (INNER SIDE): margin is medium purple (RHS N74A), middle is medium purple (closest to RHS N74B), medium conspicuousness of stripes and medium purple red (closest to RHS N66A) spot/spots, largest spot is small to medium sized, medium sized white to red pink zone at base
UPPER PETAL (OUTER SIDE): margin is medium purple (closest to RHS 71D), middle is medium blue pink (closest to RHS 68B)
LOWER PETAL (INNER SIDE): margin and middle are medium purple (closest to RHS N74A), weak to medium conspicuousness of small single spot only, small white zone at base

Origin & Breeding History: 'PEQZ0101' originated from a cross conducted between the female parent variety ‘PEQZ0015' (Calliope Medium Dark Red) and the male parent, a proprietary breeding line designated as ‘11530-3', in California, USA in July 2016. The resultant seed was sown in December 2016. The new variety was selected in May 2017 based on plant growth habit, plant vigour, foliage colour, flower colour and type.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'PEQZ0101' was conducted in a polyhouse at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario during the spring of 2024. The trial included 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 26, 2024. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 7, 2024. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
