Summary: The leaves of ‘PEZZ0017' are narrower than those of ‘Starcluster Red'. The leaves of ‘PEZZ0017' are elliptic whereas those of ‘Starcluster Red' are ovate. The margins of the leaves of ‘PEZZ0017' have a medium degree of undulation whereas those of ‘Starcluster Red' have an undulation which ranges from absent or very weak to weak. The flowers of ‘PEZZ0017' have a larger diameter than those of ‘Starcluster Red'.

LEAF BLADE: elliptic, medium green on upper side, absent or very weak anthocyanin coloration, no variegation, flat in cross section, absent or very few margin incisions, straight to slightly recurving attitude of apex, medium undulation of margin
INFLORESCENCE: medium number of flowers of highest pleiochasium, medium width of highest pleiochasium, single flower type
YOUNG FLOWER: one colour on inner side of corolla lobes, dark red (closest to N45A) on inner side of corolla lobe
COROLLA LOBE: one colour on inner side, dark red (closest to RHS N45A) on inner side, medium purple red (RHS 54B) on lighter part of outer side, upwards to horizontal attitude, four to five lobes, medium length to width ratio, no rolling of margin, no margin incisions, acute apex
Origin & Breeding History: 'PEZZ0017' originated from a controlled cross between the proprietary female parent designated ‘PTSCC0003-2' and the male parent ‘PTSCC0004-3' conducted in Gilroy, California, USA on September 20, 2017. ‘PEZZ0017' was selected on March 15, 2019 based on plant habit, branching characteristics, flower colour, flower size, and heat tolerance.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'PEZZ0017' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2024 at BioFlora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on May 27, 2024. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on August 12, 2024. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
