Summary: 'Kerpril' is a violet coloured, double petunia variety with a semi-pendulous growth habit. It can be distinguished from the reference variety 'Doubloon Blue Star' by its stronger, thicker stems and its more horizontal initial growth. The foliage of 'Kerpril' is more dense than 'Doubloon Blue Star', although the leaves are smaller. 'Kerpril' flowers earlier than 'Doubloon Blue Star' and produces larger flowers.

Description:

'Kerpril' is a petunia variety with semi-pendulous growth habit and abundant branching. The stems are thick, with no anthocyanin colouration, moderate pubescence and the foliage is dense. The leaves of 'Kerpril' are dark green and elliptic to broad elliptic in shape, with a broadly acute apex and no rugosity. The margins of the leaves are entire, with no undulation. The upper and lower leaf surfaces and the margins are moderately pubescent. The leaves of 'Kerpril' are slightly angled towards the apex of the stem. 'Kerpril' has a linear shaped sepal with an acute apex, moderate pubescence and no anthocyanin colouration.

'Kerpril' flowers mid-season and produces violet coloured, double flowers along the full length of the stems. The overall flower shape is salverform, and the petal apex is acuminate. The peduncle has dense, bristly pubescence. The inner and outer side of the corolla is violet, and the inner and outer side of the throat is dark violet. The veins on the outer side of the throat are green-violet. The throat veins on the inner side are prominent.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Kerpril' originated in Cambridge, United Kingdom, from a cross between the variety 'Surfinia Blue Vein' and a seedling known as 'B'. The original cross was made in 1995. 'Kerpril' was selected in the F1 generation. The selection criteria were double flowers, early and free flowering, the pendant habit and free-branching.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Kerpril' were conducted at Norseco, Inc., Laval, Quebec during the summer of 1999. The trials consisted of 25 cm hanging baskets, with 3 plants per basket. The plants were grown in a greenhouse, and had been planted from cuttings in February 1999. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 10 measurements.
