Origin & Breeding History: The development of 'Kakegawa S28' began in 1994 with the line Pg-9a-2a being crossed with breeding line 2H-1. From this cross, an F2 plant was crossed to 'Surfinia Violet'. This hybrid was then selected to the F4 level to produce 5BC-15A-1A-2. In 1996 this line was then hybridized with a blue flowered petunia with dwarf habit known as breeding line 3B-80A-1b-1a. This breeding work was performed at the Sakata Seed Corporation Breeding Station in Kakegawa, Japan. In the summer of 1998, 200 F1 plants were transplanted to a field in Salinas, California. Seven lines were selected for further evaluation and from these one was finally selected in the summer of 1999 and named 'Kakegawa S28'.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Kakegawa S28' were conducted at Ed Sobkowich Greenhouses Ltd., Grimsby, Ontario in the spring and early summer of 2000. The trials consisted of thirteen plants of each variety, grown in 10 cm pots. The pots were spaced in flats on 12.5 cm centres.
