Origin & Breeding History: 'Kakegawa S36' originated from a cross between the female parent, a dwarf, multiflora, cherry coloured breeding line known as '88S-1318-1a-1a-1' and the male parent, breeding line 'P-1a'. The cross took place at the Sakata Seed Corporation's breeding station in Kakegawa, Japan in 1995. Seed obtained from this cross was germinated and the resulting plants were grown in Kakegawa, Japan and evaluated during the spring of 1996. F1 plants were transplanted to the field at the Sakata Seed America, Inc. research station in Salinas, California during the summer of 1998. Two lines were selected and vegetatively propagated for further evaluation. The two lines were re-propagated in 1999 and evaluated for trueness to type and ease of propagation. Final selection of 'Kakegawa S36' based on its creeping, mounded growth habit and magenta flower colour occurred in the summer of 1999.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Kakegawa S36' were conducted in a greenhouse at Ed Sobkowich Greenhouses, Ltd., Grimsby, Ontario during the summer of 2001. The trials consisted of plants grown in 10 cm pots spaced 12.5 cm, center to center. There were a minimum of ten plants per variety. Unless otherwise indicated, measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
