Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Danpetblu' (Petitunia Blue Dream)

Summary: 'MP3' has thinner and shorter shoots, smaller sepals and smaller diameter flowers than 'Danpetblu'. The shape of the leaves is ovate to elliptic for 'MP3' while it is obovate for 'Danpetblu'. The flower colour is dark violet for 'MP3' while it is darker violet blue for 'Danpetblu'.

Description:

The plants of 'MP3' are short with a creeping growth habit. The shoots are thin to medium in thickness and short to medium in length with absent to very weak anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blade is ovate to elliptic in shape with a broad acute apex. The colour of the leaf blade is medium green with no variegation. The leaf blade has no blistering. The sepals range from linear to obovate in shape and have no anthocyanin colouration.

'MP3' has single type, funnel form flowers. The colour of the upper side of the corolla is dark violet. The veins on the inner side of the corolla lobes are purple and weakly conspicuous. Undulation of the corolla margin is moderate. The inner side of the corolla tube is mainly light blue violet and conspicuousness of the veins is moderate. The colour of the anthers before pollen dehiscence is light gray to violet.

Origin & Breeding History: 'MP3' originated from a Petunia ×hybrida breeding program which was carried out at The University of Sydney Plant Breeding Institute Cobbitty (PBIC), New South Wales, Australia. Seeds from crosses performed in 1998 were planted in 1999 and F1 plants were transplanted to the field for selection that spring. 'MP3' resulted from crossing 'X98.31' and 'X97.66', two F1 selections from The University of Sydney Petunia breeding program whose parents trace back to {'Surfinia Mini Purple' x 'Fairyland' (mini seed annual)} x {'Petunia integrifolia' × 'Apple Tart' (double seed annual)}. 'MP3' was selected based on its plant growth habit, flower colour and earliness to flower.

Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'MP3' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2005 at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario. The trial included 15 plants of each variety. The plants were grown in 10 cm pots spaced 15 to 20 cm apart. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
