Origin & Breeding History: 'X001551' originated from a Petunia ×hybrida breeding program which was carried out at The University of Sydney Plant Breeding Institute Cobbitty (PBIC), New South Wales, Australia. Seeds from crosses performed in 1999 were planted in 2000 and F1 plants were transplanted to the field for selection that spring. 'X001551' resulted from crossing 'X99.23.9' and 'X99.27.1', two F1 selections from The University of Sydney Petunia breeding program whose parents trace back to {'Surfinia Mini Purple' x 'Fairyland' (mini seed annual)} x {'Petunia integrifolia' × 'Apple Tart' (double seed annual)}. 'X001551' was selected based on its plant growth habit, flower colour and earliness to flower.
Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'X001551' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2005 at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario. The trial included 15 plants of each variety. The plants were grown in 10 cm pots spaced 15 to 20 cm apart. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
