Variety used for comparison: 'Condopink'
Summary: 'Kirimaji Double Lavender' is taller and has more of an erect growth habit than 'Condopink'. The plant width of 'Kirimaji Double Lavender' is narrower than 'Condopink'. 'Kirimaji Double Lavender' has a shorter shoot length than 'Condopink'. The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration in the shoots of 'Kirimaji Double Lavender' is stronger than in 'Condopink'. 'Kirimaji Double Lavender' has wider and differently shaped sepals than 'Condopink'. There is anthocyanin present in the sepals of 'Kirimaji Double Lavender' while there is none in 'Condopink'. The prominence of the veins on the inner side of the corolla lobe is weaker in 'Kirimaji Double Lavender' than in 'Condopink'. 'Kirimaji Double Lavender' has a wider corolla tube than 'Condopink'. 'Kirimaji Double Lavender' has a more violet flower colour than 'Condopink'. The anthers are blue in 'Kirimaji Double Lavender' while they are cream colour in 'Condopink'.
Description:
'Kirimaji Double Lavender' is a double petunia variety which has a semi-erect to semi-drooping growth habit, with medium plant height. The shoots are medium to thick in thickness with medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The shape of the leaf is elliptic to ovate with a broad obtuse shaped apex. The upper side of the leaf blade is medium green in colour with no variegation. There is a petiole present.
The sepals of 'Kirimaji Double Lavender' are spatulate in shape with weak anthocyanin present. The pedicel is medium in length, and thin in width. The overall flower shape is funnelform. The margin of the corolla has medium undulation. 'Kirimaji Double Lavender' produces violet coloured flowers. The prominence of the veins on the inner side of the corolla lobe is very weak to weak. The corolla tube length is very short in 'Kirimaji Double Lavender' and a white to light yellow colour on the inner side. The anthers are a blue colour.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Kirimaji Double Lavender' is the product of a controlled breeding program in Tochigi, Japan during 1999. The female parent was an unnamed internal breeding seed line of Petunia hybrida, while the male parent was petunia 'Sonata Pure White'. Initial selection was made in 2000.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Kirimaji Double Lavender' were conducted in a polyhouse at BioFlora Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario during the fall of 2002. The trials included 15 plants of each variety. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 10 cm pots on August 16, 2002. All colour measurements were made using RHS colour chart 2001. Unless otherwise indicated measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
