Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Sunrove' (Surfinia Pink Vein)

Summary: 'Kirimaji Veiny Pink' is a petunia variety which has narrower leaves, shorter sepals and a longer pedicel than the reference variety 'Sunrove'. The colour of the corolla lobes is very similar in the two varieties. However, the veins in the corolla tube of 'Kirimaji Veiny Pink' are a darker purple-pink colour which makes the inner side of the tube appear darker than the corolla tube of the reference variety. The flowers of 'Kirimaji Veiny Pink' have a slightly smaller diameter than those of 'Sunrove'.

Description:

'Kirimaji Veiny Pink' is a petunia variety with a creeping growth habit. The shoots are medium in thickness with no anthocyanin present. The leaves are medium green and ovate in shape, with a narrowly acute apex. There is no variegation on the leaf blade and no blistering. The sepals are linear in shape with no anthocyanin colouration. 'Kirimaji Veiny Pink' produces single, funnel form, purple-pink flowers. The corolla has weak to moderate lobing with medium undulation of the margin. The veins on the upper surface of the corolla are purple-pink and very strongly conspicuous. The apex of the corolla lobe is cuspidate. The inside of the corolla tube is dark purple and has strongly conspicuous veins. Anther colour is medium blue.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Kirimaji Veiny Pink' originated from a controlled breeding program during 1996, at Tochigi, Japan. The female parent was an unnamed internal breeding seed line of Petunia x hybrida. The male parent was 'Sunrove' (Surfinia Pink Vein). The initial selection was made in 1998.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Kirimaji Veiny Pink' were conducted in a polyhouse at BioFlora Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario during the summer of 2003. The trials included 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from unrooted cuttings and were transplanted into 15cm pots on July 11, 2003 (week 28). All colour measurements were made using RHS colour chart 2001. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety.
