Variety used for comparison: 'Danpetsweet' (Petitunia Sweet Dream)
Summary: 'Red MP101' is a petunia variety which has a compact, mounded growth habit, while 'Danpetsweet' plants are less compact and more spreading. The stems of 'Red MP101' are thinner than those of 'Danpetsweet'. The flowers of 'Red MP101' are red, whereas those of the reference variety are dark pink purple. Before dehiscence the anthers of 'Red MP101' are yellowish white and the anthers of 'Danpetsweet' are light grey blue.
Description:
'Red MP101' is a petunia variety which has compact, mound shaped plants. The shoots are medium in thickness, short to medium in length, with no anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blade is circular to obovate in shape, with a broad acute apex. The upper side is medium green and has no variegation or blistering. The sepals are linear to obovate in shape and have no anthocyanin colouration.
'Red MP101' has single, red flowers which are funnel form in shape. There are weakly conspicuous, purple veins on the inner side of the corolla. The corolla margin is moderately undulating. The corolla tube is light pinkish white with strongly conspicuous, purple veins. Before dehiscence the anthers are yellowish white.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Red MP101' was developed from a Petunia breeding program located at the University of Sydney Plant Breeding Institute Cobbitty, in New South Wales, Australia. The first cross was performed in 1997 and the final cross was made in 2000. F1 plants were selected for flower size, flower colour and plant growth habit.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Red MP101' were conducted in Oxford Station, Ontario during the summer of 2005. The trials consisted of 15 plants of each variety, grown in 10cm square pots in a polyhouse. The pots were placed in flats and spaced approximately 15 to 20 cm apart. All colour determinations were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
