Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Kakegawa S37' (Supertunia Lavender Pink)

Summary: 'Balsundalav' is a petunia variety that differs from 'Kakegawa S37' mainly in the colour of the inner side of the corolla tube. 'Balsundalav' has a violet tube with strongly conspicuous dark violet veining, whereas 'Kakegawa S37' has a whitish corolla tube with weakly conspicuous greenish yellow veins. The veins on the upper side of the corolla are more conspicuous in 'Balsundalav' than they are in the reference variety. The anthers of 'Balsundalav' are light blue, whereas the anthers of 'Kakegawa S37' are cream coloured.

Description:

'Balsundalav' is a petunia variety which has medium to tall plants with an upright growth habit. The shoots are medium in thickness, short in length and have very weak or no anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blade of 'Balsundalav' is medium to dark green and ovate in shape, with no variegation or blistering. The leaf apex is broadly acute. The sepals are linear and have anthocyanin colouration at the base.

'Balsundalav' has single, violet flowers which are funnel form in shape. The lobing of the corolla is medium. The upper side of the corolla has one colour, with medium to strongly conspicuous, purple veins. The margins of the corolla lobes are moderately undulating. The corolla tube is violet with strongly conspicuous, dark violet veins. Before pollen dehiscence the anthers are light blue.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Balsundalav' originated in a controlled breeding program during February 2001 at Arroyo Grande, California. The female parent was the proprietary petunia selection designated 570-3, characterized by its bright plum-coloured flowers and trailing habit. The male parent was the proprietary selection designated 547-6, characterized by its plum coloured flowers and trailing habit. The initial selection was made in August 2001. Asexual propagation since that time has been through the use of vegetative cuttings.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Balsundalav' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials included a total of 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, planted into 15 cm pots on March 12, 2005. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on May 27, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
