Description:

'Sunrovein' is a petunia variety which has a semi-upright to creeping growth habit. The plants are short, and have thin to medium shoots which have no anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blade of 'Sunrovein' is medium green and elliptic in shape, with no variegation or blistering. The sepals are elliptic to obovate in shape and have no anthocyanin colouration.

'Sunrovein' has single, blue-pink flowers which are funnel form in shape. The lobing of the corolla is strong. The upper side of the corolla has one colour, with medium to strongly conspicuous, red-purple veins. The margins of the corolla lobes are strongly undulating. The corolla tube is violet with moderately conspicuous veins. Before pollen dehiscence the anthers are yellowish white.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Sunrovein' originated from heavy ion beam irradiation on the variety 'Revolution Brilliantpink'. In November 1999, 5 Gy of ionic neon (135MeV) were irradiated on 128 pieces of in-vitro axillary buds of 'Revolution Brilliantpink' with the Ring Cyclotron at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research. Two weeks later, elongated buds were grown from cuttings. In April 2000, a plant having vivid purplish red corolla with a deep purplish red pattern was selected. In January 2001, the plant was propagated by cuttings. The resulting plants were grown in pots in trials at the Omi R&D Centre of Suntory Flowers Limited. By October 2001, the botanical characteristics of the selected plant were examined. The new variety was named 'Sunrovein'.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Sunrovein' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring and summer of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials included a total of 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, planted into 15 cm pots on April 29, 2005. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on June 9, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
