Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Keiyeul' (Surfinia Lime)

Summary: 'Sunpatiki' is a petunia variety which has shorter, narrower sepals than the reference variety 'Keiyeul'. The flowers of 'Sunpatiki' are smaller in diameter, with less lobing than the flowers of 'Keiyeul'. 'Sunpatiki' has less undulation of the margins of the corolla than 'Keiyeul'.

Description:

'Sunpatiki' is a petunia variety which has a semi-upright growth habit. The plants are medium to tall and have thin shoots which have no anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blade of 'Sunpatiki' is medium green and ovate to elliptic in shape, with no variegation or blistering. The sepals are lanceolate in shape and have no anthocyanin colouration.

'Sunpatiki' has single, yellowish white flowers which are funnel form in shape. The lobing of the corolla is weak to moderate. The upper side of the corolla has one colour, with moderately conspicuous, yellow veins. The margins of the corolla lobes are moderately undulating. The corolla tube is light yellow with weakly to moderately conspicuous veins. Before pollen dehiscence the anthers are yellow.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Sunpatiki' originated from the crossing of a variety called '152-3' as the female parent, with a seedling called 'Summer Sun' as the male parent. The crossing was conducted at the Omi R&D Centre, Suntory Flowers Limited, in January 2000. In May 2000, 60 seedlings were obtained from that crossing. These seedlings were grown in pots in glasshouses and were evaluated. In September 2000, one seedling was selected in view of its growth habit, flower size and colour. That seedling was propagated by cuttings and a trial was carried out to examine the botanical characteristics of the selection. The new variety was named 'Sunpatiki'.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Sunpatiki' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring and summer of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials included a total of 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, planted into 15 cm pots on April 29, 2005. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on June 14, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
