Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Revolution Pinkmini' (Surfinia Mini Pink) and 'Mediopimo' (Supertunia Mini Bright Pink)

Summary: 'Suncopapin' is a petunia variety which has a smaller flower diameter than the reference varieties and less undulation of the corolla margins than 'Mediopimo'. The colour of the lower side of the corolla is lighter in 'Suncopapin' than in 'Mediopimo' and 'Revolution Pinkmini'. 'Suncopapin' has a shorter corolla tube than the reference varieties. Before dehiscence the anthers of 'Suncopapin' are light grey, whereas they are yellowish white in the references.

Description:

'Suncopapin' is a petunia variety which has a semi-upright growth habit. The plants are short to medium in height and have thin shoots which have very weak anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blade of 'Suncopapin' is light to medium green and elliptic in shape, with blistering but no variegation. The sepals are linear in shape and have no anthocyanin colouration.

'Suncopapin' has single, blue pink flowers which are funnel form in shape. The corolla is weakly to moderately lobed. The upper side of the corolla has one colour, with very weakly conspicuous, red-pink veins. The margins of the corolla lobes are weakly undulating. The corolla tube is white and light blue violet with moderately conspicuous veins. Before pollen dehiscence the anthers are light grey.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Suncopapin' originated from the crossing of a variety called '9Pt-13a' as the female parent, with a seedling called '96PWE-5-C20' as the male parent. The crossing was conducted at the Omi R&D Centre, Suntory Flowers Limited, in July 2000. In April 2001, 80 seedlings were obtained from that crossing. These seedlings were grown in pots in glasshouses and were evaluated. In September 2001, one seedling was selected in view of its growth habit, flower size and colour. That seedling was propagated by cuttings and a trial was carried out to examine the botanical characteristics of the selection. The new variety was named 'Suncopapin'.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Suncopapin' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring and summer of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials included a total of 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, planted into 15 cm pots on April 29, 2005. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on June 9, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
