Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'USTUNI218' (Supertunia Mini Blue) and 'Revolution Violet #3' (Surfinia Blue-Violet)

Summary: 'Suncopablue' is a petunia variety which has thinner shoots than 'Revolution Violet #3'. The flower diameter of 'Suncopablue' is smaller than either of the reference varieties and the degree of lobing of the corolla is less than that of 'Revolution Violet #3'. Before dehiscence the anthers of 'Suncopablue' are medium blue, whereas the anthers of 'USTUNI218' are light grey and the anthers of 'Revolution Violet #3' are yellowish white.

Description:

'Suncopablue' is a petunia variety which has a semi-upright growth habit. The plants are medium to tall in height and have very thin shoots which have no anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blade of 'Suncopablue' is medium green and ovate to elliptic in shape, with no variegation or blistering. The sepals are linear in shape and have very weak anthocyanin colouration.

'Suncopablue' has single, dark violet flowers which are funnel form in shape. The corolla is moderately lobed. The upper side of the corolla has one colour, with inconspicuous, purple veins. The margins of the corolla lobes are moderately undulating. The corolla tube is violet with moderately conspicuous veins. Before pollen dehiscence the anthers are medium blue.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Suncopablue' originated from the crossing of a variety called 'Fantasy Blue' as the female parent and 'PAB2' as the male parent. The crossing was conducted at the Omi R&D Centre, Suntory Flowers Limited, in July 2000. In April 2001, 80 seedlings were obtained from that crossing. These seedlings were grown in pots in glasshouses and were evaluated. In September 2001, one seedling was selected in view of its growth habit, flower size and colour. That seedling was propagated by cuttings and a trial was carried out to examine the botanical characteristics of the selection. The new variety was named 'Suncopablue'.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Suncopablue' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring and summer of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials included a total of 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, planted into 15 cm pots on April 29, 2005. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on June 14, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
