Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Balsundalav' (Suncatcher Dark Lavender Vein)
Summary: 'Petlavve' differs from the reference variety, 'Balsundalav' in leaf blade length and shape, diameter of the corolla and corolla tube length. The leaves of 'Petlavve' are longer than those of 'Balsundalav'. The leaf blades of 'Petlavve' are elliptic to lanceolate in shape whereas they are ovate in 'Balsundalav'. The diameter of the corolla of 'Petlavve' is smaller than that of 'Balsundalav'. The corolla tube of 'Petlavve' is shorter than that of 'Balsundalav'.
Description:
'Petlavve' is a petunia variety with an upright plant growth habit and is medium to tall in height. The shoots are short and thin with no anthocyanin colouration. The leaves are medium green with no variegation. The shape of the leaf blade ranges from elliptic to lanceolate and the apex is broad acute to obtuse. There is no blistering of the leaf blade. The sepals are linear in shape with no anthocyanin colouration.
'Petlavve' has single, funnel shaped flowers which are pale purple with purple veins. The degree of lobing of the corolla is moderate. The corolla lobes of 'Petlavve' have moderately conspicuous venation and weak to medium undulation of the margin. The corolla tube is pale purple-violet with medium to strong venation. Before pollen dehiscence, the anthers are light blue.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Petlavve' originated from a controlled cross using 'Z 4019' as the female parent and 'Y 1009' as the male parent. The cross took place at Syngenta Seeds B.V., at Enkhuizen, the Netherlands in June, 1999. A single plant was selected in May 2000 based on early flowering, plant growth habit and vigour. Asexual reproduction of 'Petlavve' began in August 2000 in Enkhuizen, the Netherlands.
Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for 'Petlavve' were conducted in a poly-house during the spring of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on March 12, 2005. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 RHS colour chart. Unless otherwise indicated, measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
