Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Ray Purple'
Summary: The plants of 'Sunbui Mihyaku' are larger than those of 'Ray Purple'. The sepals of 'Sunbui Mihyaku' are longer than those of 'Ray Purple'. The margin of the corolla of 'Sunbui Mihyaku' has shallow incisions while that of 'Ray Purple' has medium depth incisions. The anthers on 'Sunbui Mihyaku' are light blue before dehiscence whereas those of 'Ray Purple' are yellowish white.

PLANT: semi-upright to spreading growth habit
SHOOT: thick in lower third
LEAF BLADE: ovate shape, narrow acute to broad acute apex, no variegation, medium green on upper side, absent or weak blistering
PEDICEL: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER: single type, campanulate shape
COROLLA: degree of lobing ranging from medium to strong, shallow incisions of margin, strong undulation, weak conspicuousness of veins, purple veins, when newly open inner side is violet (RHS N78A), when fully open inner side is violet (RHS N78A-B), when aged inner side is violet (RHS N78B-C)
COROLLA LOBE: rounded apex
COROLLA TUBE (INNER SIDE): violet (RHS N81B) near top fading to white (RHS 155B) towards base, medium conspicuousness of dark violet (RHS N79A-B) veins
ANTHER: light blue before dehiscence
Origin & Breeding History: 'Sunbui Mihyaku' originated from a controlled pollination between the female parent, proprietary variety 'LNW', and the male parent, propriety variety 'Pri-198'. The cross was conducted in March 2011 at the Omi Research and Development Center of Suntory Flowers Ltd. in Higashiomi-shi, Shiga, Japan. 'Sunbui Mihyaku' was selected in June 2011 based on its growth habit, flower size and flower colour.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Sunbui Mihyaku' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2016 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 17, 2016. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety on May 17, 2016. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
