Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Constraw' (Mini Strawberry Pink Veined)

Summary: The leaves of 'USTUN53402' are circular and wider than those of 'Constraw', which are ovate and elliptic. When newly opened, the inner side of the corolla of 'USTUN53402' is violet while that of 'Constraw' is blue pink. When fully opened, the inner side of the corolla of 'USTUN53402' is violet with purple primary veins and lighter purple secondary veins while that of 'Constraw' is blue pink with dark purple red primary veins and purple red secondary veins. When aged, the inner side of the corolla of 'USTUN53402' is light blue violet with purple primary veins while that of 'Constraw' is light blue pink. The corolla lobe of 'USTUN53402' has a rounded and truncate apex while that of 'Constraw' has a cuspidate apex. The main colour of the outer side of the corolla tube is grey with brown purple veins for 'USTUN53402' while it is violet with light green veins for 'Constraw'. Before dehiscence, the anther of 'USTUN53402' is violet while it is yellowish white for 'Constraw'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'USTUN53402' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Ushio Sakazaki, in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan on May 10, 2010. The cross was made between the female proprietary seedling 'P435-03' and the male parent 'Pixie Blue Veined'. The new plant was selected from the resulting progeny on May 13, 2011 in Bonsall, California, USA. 'USTUN3003' was selected based on its good branching, floriferousness, season long blooming and good heat and humidity tolerance. This variety was first propagated by vegetative tip cuttings on May 16, 2011 in Bonsall, California, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'USTUN53402' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2015 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and each transplanted into a 15 cm pot on April 13, 2015. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety on May 25, 2015. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
