Summary: The plant of 'BBTUN98901' is narrower than the plant of 'USTUNI6001'. The pedicel of 'BBTUN98901' is shorter than that of 'USTUNI6001'. The flower of 'BBTUN98901' is narrower than that of 'USTUNI6001'. The flower of 'BBTUN98901' has a weak degree of lobing while the flower of 'USTUNI6001' has a medium degree of lobing. When newly and fully opened, the inner side of the flower of 'BBTUN98901' is blue pink while that of 'USTUNI6001' is lighter blue pink. When aged, the inner side of the flower of 'BBTUN98901' is blue pink while that of 'USTUNI6001' is violet with blue pink near the apex. The anther of 'BBTUN98901' is light yellow while that of 'USTUNI6001' is light blue.

COROLLA TUBE: blue pink (RHS 63B-C) on inner side, weak conspicuousness of veins, blue pink (RHS 63C) on outer side

Origin & Breeding History: 'BBTUN98901' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Brent D. Barnes, an employee of Plant 21 LLC, Bonsall, California, USA on October 9, 2015. The cross was made between the proprietary seedling designated '15PB573-01', as the female parent, and male parent variety 'Famous Red Fire 14'. From the resulting progeny, 'BBTUN98901' was selected as a single seedling on June 23, 2016 based on its plant growth habit, plant vigour, garden performance, branching, early and freely flowering, flower colour and pattern. 'BBTUN98901' was first propagated by vegetative tip cuttings on June 25, 2016 in Bonsall, California, USA.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'BBTUN98901' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2019 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 8, 2019. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on May 21, 2019. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
