Varieties used for comparison: 'Dekko Blue' and 'Balcushlu' (ColourRush Blue)

Summary: The plants of 'BBTUN93201' are shorter than those of both reference varieties. The plants of 'BBTUN93201' are wider than those of 'Dekko Blue' and narrower than those of 'Balcushlu'. The leaves of 'BBTUN93201' are larger than those of 'Dekko Blue' and smaller than those of 'Balcushlu'. The pedicels of 'BBTUN93201' are shorter than those of 'Balcushlu'. The sepals of 'BBTUN93201' are longer than those of 'Dekko Blue' and shorter than those of 'Balcushlu'. The corolla of 'BBTUN93201' are smaller than the corolla of 'Balcushlu'. The corolla of 'BBTUN93201' have medium degree of lobing whereas the corolla of 'Dekko Blue' have weak degree of lobing and the corolla 'Balcushlu' have strong degree of lobing. The veins on the inner side of the corolla of 'BBTUN93201' has strong conspicuousness whereas those of 'Dekko Blue' have weak conspicuousness and those of 'Balcushlu' have medium conspicuousness. When aged, the inner side of the corolla lobes of 'BBTUN93201' are a lighter violet than those for both reference varieties.

COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): strong conspicuousness of purple to violet veins, dark violet (RHS 83B) when newly opened, mainly dark violet (RHS 83B) when fully opened, small amount of medium violet (RHS N82A) secondary colour along mid-veins and at margin, medium blue violet (closest to RHS N82C) when aged, cuspidate apex
COROLLA TUBE: dark violet (RHS 77A) on inner side, strong conspicuousness of veins on inner side, dark purple (RHS N79B-C) on outer side
ANTHER: violet pollen

Origin & Breeding History: 'BBTUN93201' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Mr. Brent D. Barnes, in Bonsall, California, USA on December 23, 2014. The cross was made between the female parent variety 'Supertunia Indigo Charm' and the male parent variety, a proprietary seedling designated '14PG037-01'. The new variety was selected as a single unique seedling from the cross on October 13, 2015 based on plant habit, flowering time, flower colour and garden performance. Asexual reproduction of 'BBTUN93201' was first conducted by vegetative tip cuttings on October 15, 2015 in Bonsall, California, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'BBTUN93201' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2021 at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 14, 2021. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety on May 25, 2021. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on paired Student's T-tests.
