Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Dekko Blue' and 'Sanguna Blue Imp'

Summary: The plants of 'BBTUN10102' are smaller than those of both reference varieties. The leaves and corolla of 'BBTUN10102' are larger than those of 'Dekko Blue' and smaller than those of 'Sanguna Blue Imp'. The pedicels of 'BBTUN10102' are longer than those of 'Dekko Blue' and shorter than those of 'Sanguna Blue Imp'. The sepals of 'BBTUN10102' are larger than those of 'Dekko Blue'. The corolla of 'BBTUN10102' has a medium degree of lobing whereas the corolla of 'Dekko Blue' has a weak degree of lobing and the corolla of 'Sanguna Blue Imp' has strong degree of lobing. The veins on the inner side of the corolla tube of 'BBTUN10102' have medium conspicuousness whereas those of 'Dekko Blue' have strong conspicuousness and those of 'Sanguna Blue Imp' have conspicuousness ranging from strong to very strong.

FLOWER: single type, salverform
COROLLA: medium degree of lobing, absent or very shallow to shallow margin incisions, medium degree of undulation
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): conspicuousness of purple to black veins ranging from weak to medium; dark violet (RHS 83A) when newly opened, fully opened and aged; cuspidate apex
COROLLA TUBE: dark violet (RHS 77A) on inner side, medium conspicuousness of veins on inner side, dark purple (RHS N79B) on outer side
ANTHER: yellowish white pollen

Origin & Breeding History: 'BBTUN10102' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Mr. Brent D. Barnes, in Bonsall, California, USA on August 17, 2016. The cross was made between two proprietary seedlings, the female parent designated '15P857-01' and the male parent designated '15PB514-03'. The new variety was selected as a single unique seedling from the cross on September 19, 2017 based on plant habit, flowering time, flowering frequency, number of flowers, flower colour and garden performance. Asexual reproduction of 'BBTUN10102' was first conducted by vegetative tip cuttings on September 22, 2017 in Bonsall, California, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'BBTUN10102' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2021 at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 14, 2021. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety on May 25, 2021. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on paired Student's T-tests.
