Variety Description

Summary: The plants of 'PEHY0050' are narrower than the plants of 'PEHY0031'. The leaves of 'PEHY0050' are shorter than those of 'PEHY0031' and longer than those of 'USTUN34803'. The leaves of 'PEHY0050' are narrower than the leaves of 'PEHY0031'. The sepals of 'PEHY0050' are smaller than those of 'PEHY0031' and larger than those of 'USTUN34803'. The corolla of 'PEHY0050' is smaller than the corolla of 'PEHY0031'. The corolla tube of 'PEHY0050' is shorter than the corolla tube of both reference varieties. The veins on the inner side of the corolla lobes of 'PEHY0050' are absent or weakly conspicuous whereas those of 'PEHY0031' have medium conspicuousness and those of 'USTUN34803' have a conspicuousness ranging from weak to medium.

FLOWER: single type, salverform
COROLLA: strong degree of lobing, absent or very shallow margin incisions, medium to strong degree of undulation
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): absent or very weak conspicuousness of red to purple veins, medium purple (RHS NN78A) when newly opened, medium purple (RHS NN74A) when fully opened and aged, cuspidate apex
COROLLA TUBE: medium violet (RHS N81A) on inner side, conspicuousness of veins ranging from weak to medium on inner side, dark purple (RHS N79B-C) on outer side
ANTHER: light grey to light blue pollen

Origin & Breeding History: 'PEHY0050' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Theodorus van Kleinwee, in Enkhuizen, the Netherlands, in October 2015. The cross was made between two proprietary seedlings, the female parent designated 'N3118-1' and the male parent designated 'N4679-1'. The resultant seed was sown in January 2016. A single unique seedling was selected in May 2016, in Enkhuizen, based on plant growth habit, flower size and flower colour.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'PEHY0050' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2021 at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 14, 2021. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety on May 24, 2021. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on paired Student's T-tests.
